В конце советской эпохи сотни тысяч мигрантов – узбеков, таджиков, грузин, азербайджанцев и представителей других народов – прибыли в Москву и Ленинград в поисках новых возможностей. Как проходила их интеграция в центры советской жизни? Сталкивались ли они с расизмом и дискриминацией? Как советская концепция «дружбы народов» реализовывалась на практике? Опираясь на множество устных свидетельств, собранных в ходе полевых исследований, Джефф Сахадео анализирует, как энергия мигрантов изменила их собственную судьбу и жизнь двух столиц. Автор изучает индивидуальные мотивы и стратегии этих людей, чтобы понять, как выходцы из разных уголков страны понимали идею Советского Союза и конструировали его поздние реалии. Их истории представляют Москву и Ленинград как центры множества горизонтальных сетей, связывавших разрозненные регионы СССР, помогают увидеть «застойную» брежневскую эпоху как время динамичных социальных трансформаций, а также рассмотреть сложные отношения между центром и периферией, в которых региональная идентичность одновременно утверждалась и уничтожалась. Джефф Сахадео – историк, профессор Карлтонского университета, специалист по истории Восточной Европы, Кавказского региона и Центральной Азии.
